Changes in the American diet—lower consumption of not only beef, but orange juice, pork, whole milk and chicken—meant that the average American's diet-related greenhouse gas emissions dropped from 1,932 kilograms in 2005 to 1,762 in 2014. U.S. beef consumption fell by nearly one-fifth — or 19 percent — on a per capita basis from 2005 to 2014. Eating less beef resulted in pollution reductions equal to removing 39 million cars from U.S. roads. Products from livestock, whether beef or dairy, have come under increasing scrutiny in recent years for their emissions. Raising cattle requires large amounts of land and feed, mostly corn and soy, which is heavily fertilized. Processing and applying fertilizer releases nitrous oxide, a gas with nearly 300 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide. Meanwhile, methane is emitted from cattle through their digestive systems and from manure disposal and it has at least 25 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. Consumers should also waste less of the meat they do eat. About 20 percent of edible beef ends up in the trash so if we could cut beef waste in half, we'd improve the sustainability of the whole industry by 10 percent overnight. Portugal has banned the use of wild animals in circuses by 2024 with a new law passed by parliament and applauded by animal rights groups.⠀ ⠀ Lions, tigers, elephants, camels and zebras are among the more than 1,000 animals banned under the new law covering around 40 species.⠀ ⠀ Approved with support of both left-wing and right-wing lawmakers, the law brings Portugal in line with a dozen other countries including half of Europe which have banned wild animals in circus acts.⠀ ⠀ Until 2024, circus owners will have to list their wild animals on a register created by the government so they can eventually be placed in wildlife shelters in Portugal or overseas. Environmentalists have warned that the world's growing appetite for meat, particularly in emerging economies such as China, isn't sustainable because beef, pork and poultry require far greater resources than plant-based proteins. Cows in particular also produce large amounts of greenhouse gas that contribute to global warming. Replacing traditional meat production with cultured meat would have a huge impact on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, it would free up a large amount of resources that are now used for meat production worldwide and will completely disrupt an old-established and currently unsustainable industry. A Dutch company that presented the world's first lab-grown beef burger five years ago said it has received funding to pursue its plans to make and sell artificially grown meat to restaurants from 2021. Lab-grown meat may be better for the environment and improve on several health aspects of conventional meat. But for now, at least, it can’t be exactly like regular meat and have no potential health downsides whatsoever. Thousands of heart attacks and strokes could be prevented every year after scientists made a genes breakthrough. A simple spit test could allow medics to detect those at a much greater risk of high blood pressure. Professor Punyadeera will conduct a trial of testing saliva for heart failure in conjunction with the Royal Women's Brisbane Hospital, the Mater and Prince Charles hospitals. "The beauty of saliva is that you don't need trained medical staff to collect a sample. You can monitor your heart health in your own home, using non-invasive technology," Professor Punyadeera said. "Using an e-health system, people with heart failure could be able to email the data from their saliva test to their GP who could advise them on medication levels, saving a trip to a heart specialist." We're seeing an improvement among youth in terms of reading and writing skills and a steady reduction in gender gaps. 50 years ago, almost one quarter of youth lacked basic literacy skills compared to less than 10% in the last 3 years. A recent tiger population survey in Nepal has revealed that numbers of these iconic big cats have almost doubled in under a decade. This positive news means that Nepal is set to become the first country to double its national tiger population since the ambitious goal was set in 2010 – a goal to double tiger numbers in the wild 🐯 In 2009, Nepal’s tiger numbers were languishing at around 121 but government, conservationists and local authorities have worked for almost a decade to increase the tiger population in the Himalayan nation to a booming 235, and is all but certain to hit 242 in the next four years. In Iceland, teenage smoking, drinking and drug use have been radically cut in the past 20 years. For instance, the percentage of 15- and 16-year-olds who had been drunk in the previous month plummeted from 42 per cent in 1998 to 5 per cent in 2016.⠀ ⠀ How? State funding was increased for organised sport, music, art, dance and other clubs, to give kids alternative ways to feel part of a group, and to feel good, rather than through using alcohol and drugs, and kids from low-income families received help to take part.⠀ ⠀ Parents were encouraged to attend talks on the importance of spending a quantity of time with their children rather than occasional “quality time”, on talking to their kids about their lives, on knowing who their kids were friends with, and on keeping their children home in the evenings.⠀ ⠀ A law was also passed prohibiting children aged between 13 and 16 from being outside after 10pm in winter and midnight in summer. France is at the forefront of a campaign against chemicals blamed for decimating critical populations of crop-pollinating bees. A radical step has been taken towards protecting its dwindling bee population by becoming the first country in Europe to ban all five pesticides that are killing off the insects. The state legislature passed a bill to make the sale of animal-tested cosmetics illegal within the state after 2020. Plenty of beauty brands worldwide are already 100% cruelty-free but this ban will give beauty brands across the USA a big reason to stop animal testing. The products will include makeup, skincare, shampoos, deodorants, and other personal hygiene products. Not only will the product have to be cruelty-free, but each individual ingredients must be free from testing too. Other countries with the ban include Israel, India, Norway and the EU.
