Wasim Zaid has an architectural background which cultivated his deep interest in art. He draws inspiration from his perception of his surroundings, aiming to create tangible yet conceptual artwork.
“My work focuses on local material that can be utilized to display a meaningful idea where people can relate to and build stories upon,” reads his website.
In his latest project titled Inimical Nostalgia, Zaid used a sugary material to create a new art piece. The Jordanian architect shaped the blue cotton candy, into “Hellenistic-era sculptures.”
Zaid wanted to convey how our sweet, yet unrealistic view of the past hinders the progress in the present. The cotton candy sculpture features a face that can easily be pulled apart, just like how our admiration for the past is based on a mere notion and can end up becoming a stumbling block to society’s development.
“This work reveals the necessity to have a complex cultural relationship with the past in order to benefit from it in a constructive way.”
